Every morning when the sun rises, Joaquin Sr. and Joaquin Jr. get the day started in the Alastruey kitchen to ensure that by noon they will be able to deliver the best service possible.  It is widely regarded that they have the best 15€ lunch menu on that side of Diagonal.  The kitchen at Alastruey is traditional Mediterranean, but in such a way that  they can bring you a “merluza” (typical grilled fish) capable of attracting would-be Japanese chefs to come study its mystique.  They generally only offer a two course meal, where one choice is offered for each plate.  Lately many restaurants have averted from this, however, the crew of the Alastruey refuses to compromise the quality of their ingredients.  This family has maintained such a high level of quality for so long, that they will not go back on that, even in this economy.  If you find yourself in a situation where you have to negotiate something important or impress a client, local or foreign, the fricando (sausage), estofado (stew), or the fideos a la cazuela (noodles) should help you close the deal.  If you are just in the market for a mid-morning snack the ensaladilla Rusa (potato salad with tuna) should supply all the energy necessary to change the world.
