There are some things Barcelona locals like to renounce. We enjoy stating categorically that we have never visited the Sagrada Familia, that the beach bars are for tourists and that we would never be crazy enough to eat in a restaurant along Las Ramblas. But sometimes we’re wrong.
Cachitos is a restaurant that fools you in a good way. It’s located in the heart of la Rambla Catalunya but, in spite of its location, it’s not a tourist trap. Its customers are made up of office workers in the area and locals who want to have a cocktail or eat something with their family or partner. It’s also deceiving because from the street it seems like a small and boring place, when in reality it’s design and dimensions are magnificent. The decor is part Spanish, part gypsy and fits well with the food they serve, prepared by chef Josemi Manzanal.
The food is not ostentatious; it aims to highlight the true flavours of quality ingredients. The dishes offered on the menu are traditional Spanish cuisine made with seasonal and regional ingredients. Their rice dishes (paella with vegetables, chicken, sausage and tenderloin or with artichoke and squid) are a must try. Minimal ingredients are purposefully selected, without frills or masking the flavours. Another highlight is a popular classic, scrambled eggs served with potatoes and Iberian ham, or combinations like cod and peppers or spicy sausage with Mahon cheese.
If you’re lucky you’ll visit Cachitos during truffle season, and you can try delicacies like the potato parmentier with the best white truffles from Piedmont, or cannelloni with foie and white truffles (one of the most popular dishes). The traditional Spanish dessert las torrijas (think French toast) is the perfect way to finish.
