The Australian creators of Café Federal Barcelona now bring us Café Federal Madrid, a new coffee shop that embraces what makes its counterpart in Barcelona so successful: a kitchen open at all hours, organic products and fresh coffee.
The large and nicely decorated space makes it easy to spend your whole Sunday here, beginning with the breakfast they’re famous for. Baked eggs with spinach, feta and onion are a great way to start the day, and their burgers are another highlight.
In just a few days, they’ve reached a much more diverse audience than the modern bars in the area, which give off an exclusive vibe and tend to attract people who are mainly looking to see and be seen. Federal, on the other hand, has an open and welcoming ambiance: throughout the day you can see sweepers having their breakfast at 8am, mothers picnicking with their children, couples eating dinner and friends enjoying their first drink of the night.
Aside from the relaxed atmosphere, the menu is full of hits. It’s not a huge menu, but everything in it is great and there is something special about each dish offered. Some are bold, like the carrot puree accompanying the burgers, prawns with dill and horseradish and french fries with mustard. These small surprises make you want to return until you’ve tried everything. The bar has two baristas; one is Nolo, who is always around to make you a great coffee.
Dogs and vegetarians welcome.
