The Spanish tortilla, an omelette/quiche filled with potatoes, is simple, common and yet remains respected among everyone. Talking about a tortilla is like talking about politics, religion or musical tastes. Everyone has an opinion and (almost) everyone’s is valid. And there’s a place that Madrileños can agree is one of the best in the city.
Casa Dani is well hidden inside Mercado de la Paz. They’ve been open for over 20 years and have collected a varied clientele – executives, neighbourhood residents, market producers and people who, after hearing about the mythical tortilla, emigrate from distant neighbourhoods to try what everyone’s talking about. Everyone comes together for a common cause: to stuff their hungry bellies with potatoes, eggs and onion (though you can get an option without). Some get it covered in the sauce that is the second hit of the house. 130 tortillas Monday – Thursday and more than 400 kg of potatoes Friday and Saturday. The numbers don’t lie, they’re doing something right here.
Dani Sr. and Dani Jr., along with their wife/mother Lola (the main cook) have created a place where people are treated well and eat well. When it’s cold, come for a bowl of soup and check out the simple homemade recipes on the board like stew, liver, veal steak, snails, squid or a salad … of course, once rush hour hits the dining room is stuffed to the brim.
