What is happening in the Madrid neighborhood of Malasaña is very exciting, and offers an escape from the general pessimism and depression of the times. They keep opening new, fresh and charming local businesses which are starting to create an oasis of optimism in a capital shadowed by corruption scandals and cultural depletion; one of the keys to a neighborhood that retains its identity despite gentrification and manages to preserve some of the local life. Newcomers as well as the old-timers can both enjoy a “carajillo” (coffee with whiskey) in peace and harmony. This bar/restaurant, decorated with icons of Castilla y La Mancha (which some might consider outdated), opened in 1969 and ever since then Don Manuel Rodríguez Vega gets up every morning to serve classic tapas and beers, anis and orujo (typical Spanish spirits), and traditional Castillian food with classics such as Garlic Rabbit that reminds many patrons of their childhood in villages around Madrid.
The idea is simple, they treat you like royalty without breaking the bank. Perfect for midday Price Fixe meals.
