The Mercat opened its doors a year ago in the center of Barcelona, and is known for its great tapas menu and traditional Mediterranean dishes. The intention of its creators is to serve what they like to eat, and serve it well, at a very good price.
Undoubtedly, the most attractive table in the room is the one next to the large window, from which you can observe in detail the movements of the kitchen. Right in front is a large circular bar that invites you to sit and spend hours watching the entry and exit of neighbors and tourists, eager to be entertained by a great feast.
The place is wide, bright and eager. From there the sirloin of smoked salmon or the white saffarras of pagès is prepared. A few meters away, capturing the attention of all the diners, is the kitchen where the delicacies of this noble restaurant are cooked.
Simple food, fresh and with good, raw materials: these are the words that define El Mercat, according to Eduardo, one of its founders. Therefore, its menu is the true reflection of that concept. Bluefin tuna tartare with guacamole has been named its house specialty. It also highlights the partridge vinaigrette, a dish that is well done and not often seen in other restaurants in Barcelona. Options such as grilled octopus with pork jowl or the classic patatas bravas with a homemade aioli add up, as well as the cod dices with tomato and Kalamata – these are a must that should not be missed.
There is something for everyone. For those who want to take care of their form, salads and lighter dishes are options on the menu that changes daily according to market products. All of this is accompanied by a wine and champagne menu.
The Mercat is a place that can be shared between friends as well as business partners. It has a relaxed and informal atmosphere but also has an extensive menu with moderate prices.
Fun Fact: the slates where the menu is announced were designed with a touch of joviality by one of the sons of the founders.
Undoubtedly, a recommendation that you must try is the crispy suckling pig – with 6 hours of cooking, it is truly a delicacy for the palate.
