Fred: “I wish we had met before.”
Elsa: “We met, that’s what’s important.”
This phrase, written on one of the walls of the restaurant Elsa and Fred, not only tells us about the Argentine-Spanish film that inspired this tapas bar, also conveys the air of romance and closeness that envelops you when entering the space.
The decoration reminds us of Europe in the 1950’s: antique furniture, wooden tables, bar chairs with leather tapestry and vintage objects that decorate the walls giving life to the space.
Camila and Sofía Matarazzo, two Argentinian sisters, decided to join their desires, passion and work with Catalan chef Ramon Miracle, to open a space full of charm and offer top quality dishes.
They have been operating for 6 years in El Born neighborhood, and during this time they have earned the heart (and stomach) of both foreigners and locals who frequent the place. How have they maintained success for so long? “Evolution” is one of the words they use to describe the constant challenge of maintaining and attracting new customers to the place. A permanent evolution of the menu and the dishes that serve there.
Do not be fooled by the self-denomination of “tapas bar”, what they really serve here are tapas and dishes full of creativity and flavor. For starters, a tuna tartar with almond emulsion and crunchy black rice, was one of the first dishes we get to the table. The combination of flavors is exquisite, as is its presentation. Another dish that leaves us captivated by its flavor and texture is the octopus with grilled taste, mashed potatoes and watercress. As in all others, this dish conveys the affection, dedication and passion with which each of its preparations is made here. We continue with veal ribs on the Korean BBQ with cauliflower and pickled daikon, which are so soft that they melt in your mouth.
And finally we bring the dessert: red fruit pavlova and white chocolate with a center of beet ice cream. Originality, creativity and surprise from beginning to end.
Among the novelties for the spring-summer season is the salmorejo from Cordoba with honey aubergines, ideal to enjoy along with a glass of wine on its small and cozy terrace.
In short, a kitchen that focuses especially on the taste of ingredients, with an obvious inspiration in fusion and international cuisine.
And if your are the classics, do not forget to try their patatas bravas, which have been praised in various occasions and by various means. But do not just go for them, since Elsa and Fred have, without a doubt, much more to offer to earn a special place in your heart.
