It’s no surprise that craft beer is easy to find in Madrid, considering Spain drinks more beer than wine each year. But where did it all begin? Gonzalo Retenaga opened Madrid’s first artisan beer bar, Irreale, in 2012. Behind the bar you’ll find Raúl Fernández, expert brewmaster and philosopher, who’s happy to pour you a pint from one of their twelve kegs including La Virgen (Madrid), Yria (Toledo), Sesma (Navarra), Evil Twin (Belgium), De Molen (Dutch) and Two Roads and Westbrook (both American).
There’s no shortage of options with more than 200 bottles you can enjoy at the bar or take home with you. The only downside is that once you’ve tasted their best, regular beer will never satisfy you again.
You don’t have to drink on an empty stomach – in fact, their menu is designed with beer in mind and pairs well with whatever you’re drinking: try the fresh salad with marinated onion, broccoli leaves and dried black olives, the German sausage with sauerkraut and mashed potatoes, or the Vietnamese rolls.
Irreale not only serves beer, they also create beer. Every three months they make one with their own recipe and name it after a philosopher that pays homage to their ingredients and ideology. Their latest creation: Bataille.
Come to Irreale and fall further in love with the best beers out there.
