If there is a restaurant specializing in Mexican cuisine, it is La Taquería; an authentic Mexican Street Food restaurant, located in the vicinity of La Sagrada Familia. A small hideaway outside the hustle and bustle of the streets. But that calmness breaks when you open the door. It is then that the best Mexican soundtrack, guirigay and intense smells take over the environment, being the perfect companion to a “mother” evening that will transport you to Mexico City.
A taqueria that has been in business for almost eight years were Marc, Rodrigo and Héctor offer the best street bites of their native Mexico. Pushed by the apogee of its small place, last August they decided to expand their showcase with a new trophy: La Taqueria 2.0. They didn’t want to change the neighborhood they were in, so they planted their second location in the parallel street.
An existing friendship that’s lasted from the time of being schoolgirls to present day. A brotherhood that has accompanied them for all these years in a business that has become their most intimate home. An authentic Mexican cuisine based on tacos, quesadillas and dishes that complete with mariachi essence.
Colored tablecloths, plastic plates, colorful murals, a handful of sauces and a appetizing bar that has the best micheladas in the city. And at the table is the ostentatiously held menu. Blue food, red drinks. Simple, easy and street.
We can’t start any other way than with an Aztec soup to warm us up. A tomato based soup with chili guajillo and chicken broth, accompanied by a fried corn tortilla, sour cream, fresh cheese, avocado and chili roasted pasilla.
We keep reading the menu and have high expectations. Taco pastor and taco of cochinita. A marinated pork taco with its representative touch of a piece of pineapple. And the other, a taco of shredded meat bathed in achiote and orange juice. A typical Yucatan snack that is accompanied with pickled purple onion in vinegar and oregano.
Another essential at this taqueria is their quesadillas. Don’t go without tasting the Huitlacoche quesadilla, “the food of the gods”. A mushroom that invades the maize, a precious commodity in many places and one of the star dishes in this taqueria. With our stomach almost full, but our appetite intact, we asked for its most Gringo dish. Meat with grilled cheese in a wheat tortilla.
A tour of its most genuine gastronomy, a swing of flavors, a contrast of textures and a variety of dishes that takes us by the hand in this culinary journey, along with their patrons, March and Rodrigo. The finishing touch on this Mexican tour is a corn cake with coconut ice cream and dulce de leche.
It you’re looking for authentic Mexican street food, it’s called La Taqueria.A threshold to the heart of Mexico without leaving our beloved Barcelona. A mother’s taqueria… Andale!
