In Hawaiian, makamaka means close friend. When you walk into this place and you step onto the 100 year old imported wood floor, it’s not long before you feel like you’re at home with your best buddy. Instead of offering a menu with dishes from different lands, Andrea Di Gioia, one of the founding owners, chose to add a touch of inspiration from vacations in Jamaica or Maradona (without forgetting the essential veggie burger for the vegetarians out there). Americans have always known that the best companion for two hundred grams of beef is a good cocktail. Makamaka serves the best because they asked recognized mixologists to design them especially for their menu. Options include the Mexican Breakfast (tequila, espresso, cinnamon schnapps and coffee liqueur), Wild Navy (gin, basil, sugar, fresh lemon, soda and strawberry), Big Kahuna Mojito (rum, passion fruit syrup, honey, mint and soda) and the American Barrel (bourbon , port, orange, lemon and cinnamon syrup). Arguably the main attraction of this seaside meeting point is the clientele, foreign and local, smiling and seduced by the charm of Barceloneta, Europe’s Venice Beach. But what we like to hear is that between 13:00 and 01:00 the kitchen does not close. Aloha!
