The Barrio de Las Letras is one of the best neighborhoods for discovering bars and restaurants that have been immortalized in Madrid’s literary history. The cuisine is also present with several taverns and breweries that attract residents and tourists alike, causing them to flock instinctually to the area. The scene changes when establishments start seeking to innovate with modern dishes or to attract an audience that wants to get off the beaten path and have a nice cocktail after lunch or at the end of a long workday. With this in mind, Mario Álvarez , Mario Martinez and Nacho Fresneda decided to open the restaurant and cocktail lounge Matute 12 in one of the few modernist buildings in Madrid. When you set foot inside Matute 12, you walk into a 400 square meter restaurant where you will find a “casual but elegant” menu that was made with the help of the guys in the restaurant Triciclo. For lunch or dinner you can choose from Puglias Burrata with tomato dressing, mussels with mature cream, octopus ceviche, monkfish and shrimp or onion soup with melted cheese. Sundays are by popular demand with breakfasts, lunches and snacks including bagels, eggs benedict, burgers, pancakes and cakes, with the option to sip a Mimosa with Moet & Chandon champagne. Cocktails made with mescal, sake, mint, lime, cucumber and sugar strawberry or jalapeño margaritas, or Gin and Tonics help to enliven the evening to the rhythm of funk and soul music. Stay classy people.
