Who would have imagined that a cup of coffee could be so good? That’s what you think when you read the description of the products served at Morrow Coffee, a local dedicated in body and soul to specialty coffee. Here coffee tastes like plum, black tea, chocolate and honey, as the Miramar of El Salvador, or raisins, toasted hazelnuts, grapefruit and amaretto, such as the Sidan Guji, from Ethiopia.
What is this specialty? According to Kim, one of the two founders of this cozy and sunny cafe in L’Eixample Esquerra, the products are qualified based on parameters ranging from the collection of the fruit used to prepare a beverage, through the quality and cleanliness of the grain before it’s toasted.
Andrey, partner of Kim, is responsible for the toasting, who receives the green grain and leaves it ready to grind in a process that is closer to the alchemy than to the preparation of a simple drink, since a difference of seconds can completely alter the quality of the final product. Even after it’s toasted, there are many steps to follow for the magic of the coffee to have it’s effect: each type of grain requires different grinding, the water –previously filtered– must be at an exact temperature, and no boiling the milk for several minutes, unlike whats usually seen at non-specialized establishments.
Although they offer a wide variety of options, including cups with consistent foam and a well-done drawing, to enjoy the coffee in all its splendor it is recommended to drink it without sugar. It’s not really necessary to add some, even if your taste buds are reluctant to bitter flavors. But if someone insists on sweetening it more, there is always the option of pouring in a spoonful of sugar. Of course, here they serve quality, unrefined sugar from the Philippines.
In addition to the star product, Morrow Coffee has cups of yogurt made themselves with fruit and cereals, artisan beers, pastries, snacks, and natural juices and infusions, like the one made with the husk of a coffee bean. All this is served in a relaxed atmosphere, with soft lighting and music according to the ambience of the premises, and with a young, friendly and well-prepared team (serving specialty coffee well-done is no easy task). If you want to prepare the coffee in your own house, in the shop they sell all the necessary products to make good coffee.
Once you’ve tasted the coffee at Morrow Coffee, there’s no turning back. No more drinking coffee with a lot of milk, nuclear reactor temperatures and two packs of refined sugar. Your health and your palate with thank you forever.
