Ketan Trivedi has a mission to make his restaurant, Surya, be recognized as an authentically Indian kitchen.
His menu is based on the street food of Bombay, with local dishes like pakoras, samosas, Papdi puri – a mix of yoghurt, tamarind and mint with pakoras – and Bhel puri – a salad made of grains, tomato, onion, cilantro, chili and tamarind.
Surya, in India, means the ‘Sun God’ and that translates into the spirit of the restaurant – colourful, exotic and joyful. Ketan recommends ordering the ‘Nibbles’ as a starter, like the ‘Daal Soup’ – a soup made with lentils, cumin and cilantro. But if you are looking for something cool you could order the yoghurt with cumin, carrots, cucumbers, tomato and mango. For the main dish, there is the famous butter chicken or the lamb tikka masala, which always comes with spiced basmati rice and cheese-stuffed naan bread.
The food is somewhat adapted to the Western palate but you can choose the level of heat that you would like, depending on your spice tolerance. In addition, most of the dishes are gluten-free as they are made with chickpea flour.
Ketan also has a second restaurant on the Consell de Cent street that will join his already well-known restaurant, Surya, on Pau Claris street, and it seems like his original goal is being reached.
