Three friends, a passion and an innovative concept perfectly sums up El Flako. El Flako is a cereal bar located on the outskirts of the market of Santa Caterina, in the heart of the Borne.
Its carefree, vintage and colorful style characterizes this small place that has barely been open for three months and is already giving people something to talk about. Creators Laia Rincon, Michiel Tromp and Nico Castan, can boast about being the first cereal bar in the city.
After visiting London and going to one of their cereal bars, they returned to Barcelona in search of a place where they could enjoy a bowl of cereal at a more affordable price than they found in the UK. Surprised when they did not find a cereal bar, that’s when El Flako was born. Laia tells us how she ventured into a project for two years, between bureaucratic and customs fights she was finally able to open her small place on International Cereal Day.
A small seventies-style dining room with just eight tables accommodates us while we gaze at the variety of cereals that adorn the walls where we discover Lucky Charms, Apple Jacks or Froot Loops.
El Flako makes it easy. Weekly changes to your cereal bowl card makes it easy to choose from the large variety of over 100 cereals. All three owners are cereal fanatics and they themselves are the ones who choose the perfect combination. And, if it were not enough, you can always let yourself be advised by one of them to make a bowl to suit you.
There is a vegan and healthy offer, as well as a large number of gluten-free products such as homemade cakes. As Laia says: “We try to be as healthy as possible, considering that we offer cereals with high sugar levels.” The truth is, that their menu is perfectly designed for all audiences (vegan, fitness, gluten free).
We were surprised by the choice of Laia: a balanced blend of cereals all cocoa with Life decorated with yogurt and raspberries, accompanied with hazelnut milk. And another bowl with rubbing loops, Lucky Charms and a few clouds adorned with vanilla ice cream, waffles and strawberry syrup, all with yellow cow’s milk. A bomb!
They have ten different types of milk, to which they add coloring to give a more youthful touch to their dishes. In addition they also have milkshakes and smoothies, with the intention of extending their company into summer.
The Flako is born as an innate necessity of the city of Barcelona, an existent demand of those hardened lovers of a cereal bowl; the perfect place for the most nostalgic.
